Long time
Senior Judge, Jack Sheahan passed away early Friday
morning. The first records I have on Jack, make
reference to 1952, when Jack was an YRA
representative. For many years he devoted much
of his time to Area C. In 1988 Gardner Cox wrote of
Jack, " This is truly a dedicated man in both
the areas of race management and of Judging and Area C
would be a lot poorer in the last 15 years if had not
been for his Service -- qualitatively and
quantitatively."
I think we can all agree that this service has greatly
contributed to the strength of Area C today.

Red Grant Regatta
Raritan
Yacht Club’s 2007 Red Grant Regatta and PHRF-MA
Championships was a success with 51 boats racing in the
PHRF and OD divisions, 19 boats in the Mayor’s Cup
“Cruising for a Cause” charity race on Saturday and 39
juniors participating in our Friday junior regatta. Jack
Buzzi, the weekend’s fundraising chairman, announced on
Sunday afternoon that nearly $30K was raised for the
Raritan Bay Medical Center Foundation and
Diabetes.
With wind
reaching 20 knots on both Saturday and Sunday, the wind
gods were with us and provided some of the best racing
conditions in years; a special thanks to the many race
committee volunteers that had their hands full starting and
finishing boats simultaneously as well as dropping multiple
change marks throughout the weekend. Superb
job!
The fun didn’t
end once off the water thanks to our enthusiastic “Mood
Coordinators” at the Mount Gay tikki bar,
Photoboat.com’s
daily slideshows, Pat Guadagno playing guitar on the deck
and No Discipline playing our favorite reggae tunes into
the night.
Congrats to
Paul Scalisi on Duck Season/Wabbit Season for winning the
overall Red Grant Trophy for the most competitive
division. Additional winners included Steve Buzbee on
Blue Meanie – winning the largest PHRF class, Mark Gorman
on Crush - winning the 10 boat J-80 fleet and NJYRA J-80
Championships and Mark Dupree for winning the Mayor’s
Cup.
Thanks to all
who participated both on the water and as regatta
volunteers. We hope to see all of you back in 2008, along
with additional area boats that missed out on the fun this
year! Please help spread the word for ’08 and let's
keep the momentum going for future NJORC events this
season.
